In August 2006, I participated in the Alcan 5000 Road Rally riding a 2003 BMW 1150GS Adventure motorcycle. The event began on August 14, 2006 in Kirkland, WA and completed on August 22, 2006 in Anchorage, AK. With all of the optional routes, the rally was 4400 miles covering some of the most fabulous country the north has to offer. Total mileage from my home in California up to Anchorage and back was nearly 9000 miles.
In August 2010, I participated in the 2010 Alcan 5000 Road Rally driving a 2008 BMW 1200 Adventure with a sidecar. My 16 year old daughter went along as my navigator. The rally began in Kirkland, WA on August 16, 2010 and finished in Anchorage, AK on August 24, 2010. The total mileage with the options was ~4800 miles. Not a lot of dads get the opportunity to spend 9 days riding motorcycles with their 16yo daughters. I was so lucky. This was one the very best motorcycle trips I have ever taken. The downside was the regret I brought back.
In January 2016, I travelled to Myanmar with 4 friends to ride motorcycles in Myanmar for a couple of weeks. We rented Honda CFR 250s from Zach Benoy at Mandalay Motorbike Rental and Tours. Zach was our tour guide. The bikes were in great shape, ready to go. Zach fit right in. After a couple of days, it was like riding with an old time friend. We complain about a lot of stuff here in the States. I came back with a new appreciation for my good fortune to live here in the States. You should, too.
In February 2017, I travelled to Vietnam with 4 friends to ride motorcycles for 2+ weeks. We rented bikes from Flamingo Travel and enjoyed some gorgeous countryside and great roads. Like Myanmar the year before, it was inexpensive to be there. Food, drink, and lodging were cheap. Vietnam is much more crowded than Myanmar with a population density that is almost 4 times greater. The city traffic was crazy, but once you relaxed and figured out how the flow worked, fun. The bikes were not as new as the ones we rented in Myanmar and a little more about the condition of them in the article. I don't think I need to go back.
